The Mannequin Challenge

The Mannequin Challenge has become the latest craze to sweep the internet with Hillary Clinton, Tom Hanks, Robert De Niro and even our very own Bollywood actors like Ranveer Singh and Abhishek Bachchan performing them.

But what exactly is it – you ask?

The Mannequin Challenge is a new online trend which sees people uploading videos of them looking as though they've been frozen in time. Once the clip has been recorded, the footage is shared in social media with the hashtag #MannequinChallenge.

So, what is the big deal about it you wonder? And what would we do with The Mannequin Challenge in Team Building you think? At FOCUS we are perennially on the look out for unconventional ways in which we can bring team work to life through immersive experiences that are a whole bunch of fun too. And thus emerges The Mannequin Challenge – from FOCUS! Before we dive deeper into how this fits in a learning context, do have a look at how some of our teams have done it !

Making a video like the one above is no child’s play. It does call for a lot of creativity, team work and most importantly story telling using the visual medium. A few questions that teams grapple while trying to do this challenge are:
• What is the story line?
• How do we bring it to life in just around 60 seconds?
• Should we use a background music score or not?
• Who does what?
• Which locations, what props to use?
• After the shooting is done, who edits the final video along with the FOCUS team?

Any team activity with that many questions to answer, naturally propels the team towards the different stages of storming, norming and hopefully performing.

Is this suitable for my team?

The Mannequin Challenge is suitable for teams upto around 50 people at a time. It works well for senior and junior teams. The whole activity while being fun and engaging – is debriefed around the different roles that various team members play in ensuring team success. Team dynamics and team conflicts also surface in an interesting way while we do this activity. For senior teams, the importance of distilling their message to its essence and being able to land the message in the most crisp way possible, bring home lessons on communication in a whole new way!
